How to Package Items Properly for International Shipping
April 2026 · 5 min read · Guide
Why Packaging Matters More for International Shipments
International parcels go through more handling points than domestic ones — typically 8-12 touchpoints including sorting facilities, customs inspections, and transfers between vehicles. Each touchpoint is a chance for damage if your packaging isn't up to standard.
FedEx recommends that all international packages be able to withstand a 1-metre drop test. That's the standard your packaging should meet.
Choosing the Right Box
Always use a new or sturdy corrugated cardboard box. Used boxes lose up to 50% of their structural strength. The box should be large enough to fit your item plus 5cm of cushioning on all sides, but not so large that items shift during transit.
- Single-wall corrugated — suitable for items under 10kg
- Double-wall corrugated — recommended for items over 10kg or fragile goods
- Remove old labels and barcodes from reused boxes to prevent scanning errors
Cushioning Materials
The goal is to prevent your item from touching any wall of the box:
- Bubble wrap — best for fragile items. Wrap individually and secure with tape.
- Foam sheets — good for electronics and flat items
- Crumpled paper — effective and cheap for filling voids
- Air pillows — lightweight void fill that doesn't add weight
- Avoid packing peanuts — they shift during transit and leave gaps
Fragile Items
For fragile items like ceramics, glassware, or electronics:
- Wrap each item individually in bubble wrap (minimum 2 layers)
- Place wrapped items in the centre of the box, away from walls
- Fill all remaining space so nothing moves when the box is shaken
- Consider double-boxing — place the wrapped item in a smaller box, then place that box inside a larger box with cushioning between them
- Mark the box as FRAGILE (though this is a guideline, not a guarantee of gentle handling)
Sealing and Labelling
- Use strong packing tape (at least 48mm wide) — not masking tape or cellophane tape
- Apply tape in an H-pattern: seal the centre seam and both edges on top and bottom
- Place the shipping label on the largest flat surface of the box
- Cover the label with clear tape to protect it from moisture
- Remove or cover any old shipping labels or barcodes
