Shipping from Singapore to India: Duties, Restrictions & Delivery Guide
April 2026 · 7 min read · India
Delivery Times
- FedEx International Priority: 2-3 business days to Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai
- FedEx International Economy: 4-6 business days
India's major metro cities have excellent FedEx coverage. Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities may take an additional 1-2 days for last-mile delivery.
Indian Customs: What You Need to Know
India has one of the most complex customs regimes in Asia:
- No de minimis threshold: Every import to India is subject to customs assessment, regardless of value.
- Basic Customs Duty (BCD): Ranges from 0-100% depending on the product category. Electronics, clothing, and luxury goods typically attract 10-30%.
- IGST (Integrated GST): 18% on most goods (12% on some categories). Applied on top of the customs duty.
- Social Welfare Surcharge: 10% of the Basic Customs Duty.
Total import charges can reach 40-60% of the declared value for many consumer goods.
KYC Requirements
India requires Know Your Customer (KYC) documentation from recipients for customs clearance:
- Aadhaar card or PAN card number of the recipient
- IEC (Import Export Code) for commercial shipments
- GST number for business importers
FedEx India will contact the recipient to collect KYC documents before clearing customs. This can add 1-3 days to delivery if the recipient is slow to respond.
Prohibited and Restricted Items
- Used electronics — India restricts import of used/refurbished electronics
- Food items — Most food products require FSSAI approval for import
- Alcohol and tobacco — Require special licenses
- Cosmetics — Commercial quantities require BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) certification
- Currency — Cannot send Indian rupees into India
Tips for Shipping to India
- Inform your recipient about KYC. Tell them to have their Aadhaar/PAN ready. Delayed KYC submission is the #1 cause of slow Indian deliveries.
- Use DAP terms. Let the recipient pay duties — Indian duty rates are high and hard to predict accurately.
- Declare realistic values. Indian customs is known for re-assessing declared values that seem low. Under-declaration can result in penalties of 100-200% of the duty amount.
- Include the recipient's phone number and email. FedEx India relies heavily on phone/email communication for customs clearance.
- Consider the CECA. Under the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement between Singapore and India, some goods manufactured in Singapore qualify for reduced duty rates.
