Shipping from Singapore to Malaysia: Options, Costs & Tips

Shipping Options

Shipping from Singapore to Malaysia is one of the most common cross-border routes in Southeast Asia. Despite the short distance, all shipments must clear Malaysian customs, which means proper documentation is essential.

Delivery Times

• FedEx International Priority — 1-2 business days to KL, Penang, JB
• FedEx International Economy — 3-5 business days
• SingPost — 3-7 business days (economy), unreliable tracking

For urgent documents and parcels under 1kg, FedEx Priority is often worth the premium. For heavier shipments where speed is less critical, Economy offers better value.

Malaysian Customs and Duties

Malaysia's customs rules for imported goods:

• De minimis threshold: MYR 500 (~S$150). Shipments below this value are generally duty-free.
• Sales and Service Tax (SST): 10% sales tax on most goods above the threshold
• Import duties: Vary by product category, typically 0-30%
• Prohibited items: Include e-cigarettes/vapes, certain publications, and products with Israeli markings

Documentation Required

• Commercial invoice with item descriptions and values
• Recipient's full address including postcode
• Recipient's phone number (Malaysian customs may call for clarification)
• HS codes for commercial shipments

Tips for Shipping to Malaysia

• Use Malay or English for item descriptions — both are accepted by Malaysian customs
• Include the Malaysian postcode — the 5-digit postcode helps with faster sorting and delivery
• Avoid sending food items without checking MAQIS (Malaysian Quarantine) regulations
• Electronics must be SIRIM-certified for commercial import — personal-use items are usually exempt
• Consider the MYR 500 threshold — keeping shipment values below this avoids duties on most goods
