UK customs processing has improved significantly since the post-Brexit transition period. Most FedEx shipments with proper documentation clear within hours.

UK Import VAT (The Big Change)

Since January 2021, the UK's import VAT rules changed significantly:

• Goods valued at GBP 135 or less: VAT (20%) is collected at the point of sale by the seller, not at the border. If you're selling to UK consumers, you must register for UK VAT and charge it upfront.
• Goods valued over GBP 135: Import VAT (20%) and any applicable customs duties are collected from the recipient at the border by the courier.

For non-commercial shipments (gifts, personal items), import VAT is charged at the border on goods valued over GBP 39.

Customs Duties

The UK applies its own tariff schedule (UK Global Tariff) separate from the EU:

• Most electronics: 0% duty
• Clothing: 6.5-12%
• Footwear: 8-17%
• Food products: variable, some very high

Singapore and the UK are working towards a Free Trade Agreement (UK-Singapore FTA) that could reduce or eliminate many of these duties.

What You Need to Know

• EORI number: Commercial importers in the UK need an EORI number (Economic Operators Registration and Identification). If your recipient is a business, ask for their EORI number to include on customs documents.
• Commodity codes: The UK uses 10-digit commodity codes based on the HS system. Accurate codes are essential for correct duty assessment.
• Country of origin: Must be stated on the commercial invoice. Goods manufactured in Singapore may qualify for preferential rates under trade agreements.

Tips for Shipping to the UK

• For B2C under GBP 135: You should register for UK VAT and charge it at checkout. If you don't, the courier will charge the customer VAT plus an advancement fee.
• Include a detailed description — UK Border Force has increased scrutiny on vague descriptions since Brexit.
• Provide the receiver's email — FedEx UK sends customs notifications via email, speeding up clearance.
• Mark gifts clearly — Genuine gifts between individuals have a higher duty-free threshold (GBP 39 for VAT exemption).
